Storytelling: Video Recording Opportunity

Henry Dancer Days (HDD) works across the UK to support children and young people with cancer and their families. The diagnosis of child cancer has a huge impact on the extended family, emotionally, socially and financially, their lives irrevocably changed.

A key strand of our programme is our Storytelling Project. We employ professional storytellers to work with children from 0-18 years with all forms of cancer, often with additional medical needs. Our one-to-one sessions are considerably more than “distraction projects”. By escaping into a world of stories the children are taken from the surrounding ward environment and into a place just for them. Our storytellers involve children in role play: acting out the stories, rather than simply expecting them to listen passively – in this way the kids have far more fun! Laughter is a common feature of our sessions.

We are acutely aware of the loss of opportunities for language development in hospital, especially for younger children and their siblings. Children for whom English is a second language can have particular difficulties.

We are currently looking for two professional storytellers, one whose first language is Welsh the other whose first language is Arabic, each to record a 5-minute story for children aged around 5-8 years of age. We are looking for engaging, charismatic storytellers who are confident in presenting and recording their stories to a high standard.

The recording will be used in hospital visits as a resource available only to HDD personnel.

The fee for each recording is £250.
